Hat Trick for Castrol Raceway: 3rd Times the Charm

This past week at the IHRA National Track Operators conference in Cleveland, for the third year in a row Castrol Raceway has been honored by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) with a special award of distinction. Among his peers in the drag racing industry Rob Reeves has been given the 2008 IHRA National Track Operator of the Year Award. In 2007 Castrol Raceway received the IHRA Award of Excellence and in 2006 Rob Reeves was given the IHRA National Track Operator of the Year, now again for 2008.

“We are very proud of our accomplishments and the recognition for all of our hard work” said Reeves, “Castrol Raceway has a great Team, and everyone works endlessly to make the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals happen without a hitch.” Work they do and it has definitely paid off. Among all IHRA National event tracks, Castrol Raceway has the highest advance ticket sales and record breaking crowds each day of the event.

Racers come back year after year and proclaim “Edmonton has the Best Fans in all of North America”. This is true and accurate statement. Castrol Raceway would not be where it is today without the support and encouragement from our loyal fans and sponsors. The 2008 IHRA National Track Operator of the Year Award is dedicated to every single fan, sponsor, staff member, and promotional partner involved in bringing International recognition to Castrol Raceway on the motorsport stage. To all of you we say Thank You; let’s go for a four-in-a-row for 2009.

Freedom Ford Bracketeer Series Final Weekend is in the Books

It was a busy weekend at Castrol Raceway with the final Freedom Ford Bracketeer Series races of the season. For Jr. Dragster and Top Eliminator the weekend was just a double header points weekend but for Non Electronics and Electronics classes it was a triple header. With championships up for grabs it was a weekend none of the racers wanted to miss.

Race 1 Results Saturday September 20th were as follows:

Jr. Dragster started the day off with 19 competitors and the top 5 racers in points within 80 points of each other. In the final Ian Admiraal of Edmonton took on Chloe Mix of Leduc. Admiraal dialled an 8.16 and had the better light with a .059 to take the win running an 8.183 to Mixes 8.03 dial, .123 light and 8.052 run. The win moved Admiraal into 4th place in the standing and Mix within 12 points of Katrina Cherchuk points leader.

In Non Electronics Bob Schentag of Calgary took his 70 Nova to the finals for the first time this season to take on current points leader Dan Coss in his 70 duster. Coss dialled a 12.99 and left first to Schentag's 10.68 dial. At the finish line both racers broke out but Schentag broke out by less running a 10.647 to Coss’s 12.955 run. With the runner up day Coss sealed his second championship in a row as no one could catch him in points.

In Electronics Barry Kozicki of Sherwood Park in his 68 Nova took on Brent Coleman of Edmonton in his 68 Chevelle. Coleman had the better light but broke out at the top end giving the win to Kozicki who ran a 9.829 on his 9.80 dial. The runner up finish moved Coleman into 3rd spot just 19 points ahead of 4th place Natasha Cherchuk.

In Top Eliminator the final saw two Stony Plain competitors in action with Curt Smith taking on Paul Glandon. Smith dialled his 63 Corvette in at an 8.46 while Glandon dialled his 68 Camaro in at an 8.75. With an 8.476 run Smith took the win over Glandon who ran an 8.77 run.

Race 2 Results Saturday September 20th was the event that was called back on September 6th: The results were:

In Non Electronics say Ed Matiejewski of Sherwood Park taking on Phil Hall of Camrose. It was the battle of the Nova’s as Matiejewski dialled his 71 Nova in at a 12.20 to Hall’s 9.79 dial in the 72 Nova. Matiejewski left first and won the race running a 12.288 to Hall’s 9.867 run. The win moved Matiejewski to within 5 points of second place Darren Ursel.

In Electronics it was match up between the top two in points Rick Spargo in his 67 Nova and Jeff Colman in his 67 Camaro. Coleman dialled a 10.78 and left first to Spargo’s 9.89 dial. At the finish line Spargo took the win with a 9.898 run to Coleman’s 10.815 run. The win confirmed Spargo’s season championship putting him out of reach with just one race left.

Sunday September 21st was the final day for the Freedom Ford Bracketeer Series. Non Electronics and Electronics championships were already decided but the 2nd and 3rd place finishes were still up for grabs. In Jr. Dragster the championships was still up for grabs for any one of 4 racers and the competition was intense.

In the finals Tyler Gritten of Sherwood Park took on Cory Schmucker of Red Deer. The two racers had to run the finals twice due to a malfunction of the timing equipment. Gritten dialled an 11.37 to Schmucker's 7.92 dial. At the finish line Gritten took the win with an 11.459 run. The runner up finish was enough though to give Schmucker the Jr. Dragster championship by just 4 points over second place finisher Chloe Mix.

In Non Electronics the new 2008 champion Dan Coss took on Ed Matiejewski. Coss dialled his 70 Duster in at a 12.99 and ran a 13.002 to Matiejewki’s 12.270 run on his 12.23 dial. The runner up for Matiejewski moved him up to second in points ahead of Darren Ursel.

Congratulations Tim Boychuk

Epping, N.H. (Sept. 7, 2008) – Tim Boychuk has only been behind the wheel of a Top Fuel Dragster for a very short time. Prior to the July Mopar Canadian Nationals in Grand Bend, Todd and Barry Paton tapped Boychuk to drive their 2004 McKinney for the remainder of the 2008 season.

The big payoff probably came a little sooner than they expected.

Boychuk (Edmonton, Alb.) drove past Terry McMillen in the final round at New England Dragway to claim his first career win at the Amalie Oil North American Nationals. Boychuk had a rough road to travel, but he was able to drive through Mike Strasburg (who set the track speed record) in the first round and points leader Spencer Massey in the semifinals to get to the run for the money.

There he posted a 4.758 at 306.19 mph to knock off a tire-smoking McMillen.

“This is the best feeling in the world…it’s just awesome,” Boychuk said from the New England Dragway winner’s circle. “I have to thank the Patons for letting me drive the car; they really helped me out and have a great crew. It was a wonderful weekend.”

It didn’t take long for Boychuk to get the hang of Top Fuel racing.

“I’m still learning to drive it,” he said. “This was my fourth race and it’s spectacular. At the end of the track I had to get on the radio and ask how we made out because I really didn’t know. I wanted to make sure I didn’t mess up and Barry came on the radio and told me we’d won. It was really cool.”

From everyone at Castrol Raceway, Congratulations Tim!

Alberta Loves Doin’ it in the Dirt!

This past weekend the Boston Pizza: Oil City Cup descended on the Dirt Oval at Castrol Raceway and what a race! A tornado of fans joined us on Friday and Saturday to witness Canada’s only World of Outlaws Sprint Car event. Saturday brought about the largest crowd ever on the oval track; by 7pm it was standing room only. Ticket sales for each night far exceeded the expectations of both Castrol Raceway management and World of Outlaw officials. Officials were so impressed with the crowds they have already established the date for next years event; August 28 & 29, 2009. Watch our website closely as the Save Your Seat program will be up and running in the next few weeks. If you want to be guaranteed a seat for next years event-purchase early!

A huge Thank You goes out to Kelly McClung and the Team at Boston Pizza. It is with their support we can make this event possible. As the Title sponsor of the Oil City Cup we hope they are proud to be involved with Canada’s ONLY World of Outlaws event. Boston Pizza a great friend of racing. Make sure to visit your local Boston Pizza, thank them and they may be back. (Let’s see if we can convince Boston Pizza to create a “Methanol” Pizza for the die hard race fans)

Another Big Thanks goes to Power Plus and the Lassu Family for hosting the very Exclusive VIP Checkered Flag Club. Guests of Power Plus Checked Flag Club enjoyed great seats, private autograph sessions, excellent food and beverage service, and of coarse the annual collector hat.

Our Staff went above and beyond both nights; huge crowds and intense activity kept all on their toes. Thank you to each and every member of our team for helping make this the most successful event our oval track has ever seen.

To view the overall race results and to view a few pics of the weekend, go to: www.worldofoutlaws.com

A final and enormous THANK YOU goes out to our spectators and fans; you have all made this venture a truly great experience for us. It is our honor to provide you with the best racing possible; we hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

Schatz Continues to Lead World of Outlaws Standings, Though Meyers Gains Ground after Win in Oil City Cup Finale

Donny Schatz used two Top-10 finishes in the second annual Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this past weekend to remain atop the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings. He is the only driver that has finished in the Top-10 in all 45 A-Feature events this season. That streak was in jeopardy on Friday night, after he was caught up in an accident on the 23rd lap that led to him getting upside and having to go to the work area for extensive repairs before the restart. Over the course of the final 12 circuits of that event, he charged from the 18th spot to finish ninth. The North Dakota native followed that up with a runner-up finish on Saturday night. He leads the series with 12 A-Feature wins this season aboard the Armor All J&J.

Jason Meyers picked up his eighth A-Feature win of the season on Saturday night at Castrol Raceway and coupled with a fourth-place performance on Friday night was able to gain 14 points on Schatz in the standings over the weekend and now trails him by 105 markers, heading into a busy stretch of races at the end of August and into September. Meyers leads the series with 37 Top-Five finishes, as he continues to chase his first series title, piloting the GLR Investments KPC.

Craig Dollansky finished fifth on the opening night of the Oil City Cup, and followed that up with a seventh-place showing in the finale of the two-day event to remain third in the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings. He also set fast time both nights to earn 10 bonus points. The driver of the Snap-on Tools Maxim has 39 Top-10 finishes on the season, with 28 of those being Top-Five performances. He has won seven times this season leads the series in laps led, with 284.

Joey Saldana finished fifth in the finale of the Oil City Cup and remains fourth in points, on the strength of 34 Top-10 finishes. He won his third event of the season last week at Billings Motorsports Park in Montana, as he continues his third season behind the wheel of the Budweiser/Open Joist Mopar-powered JEI.

Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion finished third on both nights of the Oil City Cup in the Q Oil Maxim and moved to within 13 points of Saldana in the standings, as they battle for the fourth position. Kinser has won six A-Feature events this season, and has 32 Top-10 finishes, with 21 of those being Top-Five performances.

Jac Haudenschild picked up his first win of the season on Friday night in the opener at Castrol Raceway, after his team had to change an engine after the Crane Cams Dash. He is solidly in the sixth spot in points, on the strength of 34 Top-10 finishes, as he continues his first season behind the wheel of the Owens-Corning Fiberglass Maxim for the Carnahan Motorsports team.

Chad Kemenah finished second on Friday night in the Oil City Cup and was ninth on Saturday night to remain seventh in points. The native of Findlay, Ohio has racked up 27 Top-10 finishes this year with 10 Top-Fives among those, as he continues to close in on his first win of the 2008 campaign in the Kantor Oil Company Maxim.

See you at the races!

Winning is all that matters for Tony Stewart Racing’s (TSR) Donny Schatz.

The two-time Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series champion continues to lead the way this season with a series-best 12 wins. He’ll look to add to that total this weekend with a pair of races north of the border on Friday and Saturday at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton.

Following three top-10 finishes in his home state of North Dakota and a runner-up finish Tuesday night at Billings (Mont.) Motorsports Park (BMP), Schatz returns to action behind the wheel of the TSR No. 15 Armor All/Chevy/ParkerStore J&J on Friday looking to stop his WoO winless streak at eight. Even though he won the prestigious Knoxville Nationals on Aug. 9 and has finished inside the top-five in 19 of his last 22 WoO starts, the Fargo, N.D., resident is adamant about returning to a WoO victory lane for the first time since July 26, when he won at K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Friday night, Schatz and the TSR Armor All team return to Canada for the second annual Oil City Cup at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway. Schatz will be looking to repeat his performance from last year at Castrol, where he established a new track record in qualifying, finished third in the opening-night feature event, and won the finale to earn the inaugural Oil City Cup. The victory in Edmonton was his 14th WoO triumph in 2007 and broke a seven-race winless drought.

Tuesday’s second place finish at BMP gave Schatz 32 top-five finishes to date in 2008 WoO competition. The current WoO championship leader continues to lead the standings with 6,198 points, 119 ahead of Jason Meyers. He’s finished in the top-10 in all 43 nights of action this season.

Race fans unable to attend this weekend’s events at Castrol Raceway can follow along online on DIRTVision.com. Fans can listen live as Johnny Gibson, “Voice of the Outlaws,” calls the action as he does at all WoO Sprint Series events on the DIRTVision.com cybercast, as well as on the DIRT Radio Network. Go to www.DIRTVision.com for more information on all the site features, including updated results from each night of racing, as well as a chat room to interact with other race fans.

For both Friday and Saturday’s events at Castrol Raceway, pit gates will open at 2 p.m. MDT and the grandstands will open at 4 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. The official track Web site is www.castrolraceway.com. For ticket information, call (815) 344-2023, or visit www.slspromotions.com.

Donny Schatz, driver of the No. 15 TSR/Armor All/Chevy/ParkerStore J&J:

You base your success on wins, and wins only. You’ve been stuck on 12 since July 26. How much attention do you pay to the time between wins?

“I try to forget the last race as soon as it’s over and start thinking about the next one. Experience tells me that your next race is always the most important one. But, yeah, we think about the wins and why we haven’t been winning in-between them. The only way you get better is by staying ahead of the competition, and we’re trying to do that.

“Last week, we found ourselves at three tracks where track position was everything. We qualified well all three nights in North Dakota, and in two cases didn’t make the draw positions for the dash and that really hurt our chances. Tuesday night we put ourselves in a good position to break through by winning our heat and drawing the pole for the dash, but traffic didn’t go our way in the feature. So we’ll have to keep fighting out there. We seem to be streaky at times, as far as getting wins in bunches. We’re hoping to start another streak in Edmonton Friday night.”

This weekend, you return to Castrol Raceway. Does previous success at the track add to your confidence?

“We’re always pretty confident, but going to places where you’ve been good before helps. The thing you can’t do is be overconfident because things in this sport are always changing. Something that worked before may not work now, and what we did at Castrol last year may not be good this year. That’s where having a good crew comes into play. This TSR crew (Rick Warner, Shane Bowers, and Kyle Sundby) is the best out here and I know we’ll all be paying attention to details so that we can get the Armor All, Chevy, ParkerStore No. 15 back where we want to be – in victory lane.”

MONSTER ENERGY CMRC MOTCROSS NATIONALS

According to discriminating MX forums, “No detail was spared at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, AB. From track prep to dirt to layout to pits, everything was top notch at Castrol”

“Well guy’s, that track in Edmonton has just set the standard for motocross in this country. It is the best facility, hands down in this country. A nice flat mowed grass pit area, awesome for the factory rigs, made working on the bikes a dream, lots of grandstands for the spectators. Yes they actually had spectators, lots of them! Track was excellent, dirt was the best I've ever seen, lots of banners, hay bale covers and checker flag track markers all around, very good presentation. How about the concert by Nova Scotia’s own The Truze (spelling?)** at the Budweiser facility. Top notch entertainment, plus motocross to boot. That’s how it's done. Under hot sunny skies, Team Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing's Colton Facciotti and Aron Harvey took no prisoners at Round 6 of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals at the brand new Castrol Racing facility in Edmonton, AB on Sunday. Facciotti, who displaced Team Suzuki Rockstar Energy OTSFF's Tyler Medaglia from the lead in the MX1 points standings, booked his fourth clean sweep of the season. Harvey, who recorded his second consecutive clean sweep in MX2, clearly has set his sights on points leader Eric Nye, who nailed down 5th overall on the strength of 5-5 motos.

Canadian motocross icon Blair Morgan, who greeted the checkered in 5th place in moto one, pulled out all the stops in the second moto to claim 2nd spot, which saw him finish the day with 2nd overall, making it another banner weekend for Team Toyota Yamaha Blackfoot Fox Racing. Medaglia, who proved fastest out of the gate in both motos, carded 3rd overall on the strength of 4-3 motos. With his reign at the top of rankings over, he now trails Facciotti by 11 points. Monster Energy Cernics Kawasaki's Dusty Klatt, 3rd in the points chase, claimed 4th overall on the strength of 2-6 motos.

In the first MX1 moto, Medaglia snared the holeshot with Yamaha/Blackfoot's Jimmy Nelson, Factory Connection Yamaha's Simon Homans, Suzuki OTSFF's Mitch Cooke and KTM Royal Distributing Thor Riverside MX's Jeff Northrop chasing him into turn one. Medaglia, who has been unable to find his groove on the hard western tracks, quickly lost his lead to Northrop. The Californian's position at the head of the pack was nearly just as short-lived, when Facciotti stormed by him a few laps later.

Once in control, Facciotti stepped up the pace and took it home to the checkered flag. He was followed by Klatt, who had to work his way through the pack from a 15th place start, and Northrop. Meanwhile, Nelson found himself dropping out of the top-five mix with mechanical problems while Cooke, who ran in 4th for a while, crashed and dropped back to an 8th place finish.

An on fire Medaglia nailed the second moto holeshot, but once again he was unable to hold onto the lead. Facciotti, who clearly has his mind set on winning the MX1 Championship, installed himself into the lead early on in the race to basically check out and claim his second victory of the day. His teammate Morgan also stuck a pass on Medaglia to go on and run his own race in 2nd place. With 2nd overall on the day, Morgan recorded his best finish of the season to date.

In the first MX2 moto, Aron Harvey pegged the holeshot taking Clearbrook Yamaha's Kyle Beaton, Leading Edge Kawasaki's Nick Evennou, and Suzuki Rockstar OTSFF's Jeremy Medaglia with him. Beaton put in a number of assaults on Harvey's lead but a bobble saw him finish the moto in 8th place. Fourth place finisher Evennou's teammate Teddy Maier, also a top starter, finished 3rd behind Medaglia who occupied 2nd place for most of the moto.

In moto two, Beaton proved to be the fastest out of the gate but Harvey had every intention of taking over the lead to make it a double-moto win. Maier, looking for an overall podium finish as well, also stuck a pass on Beaton as did KTM Royal Distributing Thor Riverside MX's Mason Phillips, who finished 7th in moto one. Meanwhile, Medaglia managed to secure 3rd overall on the podium, thanks to a 6th place finish behind Eric Nye who settled for his second 5th place moto finish of the day.

In the Suzuki Women's Series, KTM's Jacqueline Ross further solidified her lead in the title hunt by adding another 50 points to her bounty, thanks to a clean sweep. She was followed onto the podium by Kawasaki's Heidi Cooke, who carded 2-2 motos, and Blackfoot Suzuki's Jolene Van Vugt, who clinched 3rd overall on the strength of 3-3 motos.

Matt Hagan Finds the Nitro Funny Car Winner’s Circle at IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals Despite Heavy Heart

EDMONTON, Ab. (July 7, 2008) – Matt Hagan knocked off Grant Downing to claim the Nitro Funny Car title at the CARS RV & Marine & Motorsport Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, but his visit to the Winner’s Circle was less than joyous. Though his focus was on racing his mind was worlds away, on friend and teammate Dale Creasy Jr. at Royal Alexandria Hospital in downtown Edmonton.

Creasy suffered severe leg trauma following his semifinal round crash Sunday afternoon and was airlifted to the hospital. He was scheduled for surgery Monday with a broken right foot and compound fractures in his left leg. Creasy is the driver responsible for getting Hagan into a competitive Nitro Funny Car this season after he moved up from the Pro Modified ranks, and the win at Castrol Raceway. He considers Creasy his mentor and, after watching the life-flight helicopter take him away from Castrol Raceway, found it virtually impossible to keep his focus.

“That’s the toughest part. You can’t find out any information about what happened because no one knows,” Hagan said. “You watch your friend be taken away in a helicopter, then you have to get re-focused on doing your job. You try to stay focused but all you can do is think about Dale. It was a really tough deal.”

Hagan was able to focus enough to defeat Steven Macklyn in the semifinal. He then, after the rains washed away the final rounds Sunday, made a solo pass for the win Monday morning when racing resumed and Grant Downing, his finals competition, could not answer the call. Hagan made a strong lap for the fans Monday but blew the body off his Monte Carlo, causing a bit of cosmetic body damage. But he couldn’t have cared less about the car when he knew Creasy was scheduled for surgery a couple of hours later.

“Blowing the body off the car didn’t help things, but that was the least of it,” Hagan said. “Now we’re going to go to the hospital to see Dale. I’m giving him the trophy from this race because he deserves it. He’s helped so many people in this class and has been such a big part of my career. This Ironman isn’t mine, it’s his. I just hope he’s okay.”

Hagan is going to stop at chassis-builder Murf McKinney’s shop on the way home. He had to get his wheelie bars repaired after breaking them in the final round, but he has other things on his agenda as well.

“I want to talk to Murf to see if there is something we can come up with to better protect the driver’s legs in these cars,” he said. “These things are dangerous; we know that every time we strap ourselves in. But if we can come up with something to protect the driver better I think we should make every effort to do it. We all have families. I have a year-and-a-half old son and a wife. I want to make sure everything is as safe as possible. I know I’m taking a risk when I get in the car, but I want to eliminate risks that might be unnecessary. Murf is a smart man, hopefully we can come up with something to address this.”

Kevin Jones (Berea, Ky.) claimed his second career Ironman in the Torco Pro Nitro Top Fuel class, stopping Budds Creek winner Bobby Lagana Jr. in the final round. Jones is a fan of rain-delayed events…his first career victory came at the rain-delayed Sooner Nationals in Tulsa last season. Jones defeated Spencer Massey in the first round and Tim Boychuk in the semifinals to advance to the final round.

There, against Lagana, neither driver could put together a smooth lap. Both had to pedal their cars, but Jones was able to get his Interstate Batteries rail hooked up sooner and reached the finish line first with a 5.271 pass at 280.84 mph. Lagana clocked a 6.301 at 182.90.

Carl Spiering (Jordan Station, Ontario) has not been a regular on the IHRA circuit this season, but when he shows up to race he always makes his presence felt. Spiering drove his Eaton-backed Corvette to the Pro Modified championship in Edmonton, defeating Thomas Patterson in the final.

“This is just terrific,” an elated Spiering said after the race. “We tried to stay on our game plan for this deal and it worked. We didn’t put down any big numbers, but neither did anyone else. We remained consistent throughout and it paid off.”

Laurie Cannister (Johnstown, Ohio) claimed the Alcohol Funny Car championship Sunday before the rains came, defeating Paul Noakes in the final round for the second time this season. Canadian Bob Bertsch claimed the Pro Stock Ironman in memory of his fallen crew member, John Weisler, who passed away during the President’s Cup Nationals in Maryland three weeks ago.

Mother Nature Has the Last Say at Jam-Packed Castrol Raceway

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (July 5, 2008) – For the second day in a row rain and lightning brought an exciting day of qualifying for the CARS RV & Sport & Marine Rocky Mountain Nationals to an early end.

The day which started with a huge crowd enjoying top-notch racing action under clear blue skies ended prematurely when, as Friday, strong winds blew rain into the area. And, as Friday, attempts to dry the track after an initial stoppage proved futile despite the best efforts of Castrol Raceway and IHRA staff.

Pro Stock and Alcohol Funny Car fields were set before the first showers struck, while Pro Mod has in the middle of its session. A revised ladder put Mike Janis, who carded a best pass of 6.173, 232.19, at the top of the list.

In Pro Stock, Bob Bertsch, with his Rislone Engine Treatment-backed team from Willis, Michigan, claimed top qualifying honors as well as the Last Man Standing bonus with a pass of 6.568 at 213.33 mph. Bertsch is the lone Pro Stock driver at Edmonton. His decision to attend the race was twofold. He lost crew member and friend John Weisler during the previous event, at Budds Creek, Maryland, and Weisler's widow urged him to continue racing.

Said Bertsch, "I needed to get back to the racetrack." He said he also had made a commitment to his sponsor, who had been counting heavily on the two Canadian races to promote a product recently introduced north of the border. "My sponsor asked me to go, and that's what I signed up for at the beginning of the year," he said.

He said that "it's weird" to be the only driver "competing" in the class this weekend. "Some moments it feels good, and other moments it feels sad," Bertsch said. Prior to his run tonight a moment of silence was observed in honor of his fallen friend.

Dr. Thomas Carter is the only competitor other than Laurie Cannister to have claimed an Alcohol Funny Car Ironman this season, taking the win at the Motor City Nationals at Milan, Michigan, in May. Carter, of Cuero, Texas, currently sits third in championship points behind Cannister and Rob Atchison.

Saturday evening he claimed both the No. 1 qualifying spot and Last Man Standing honors and the accompanying five bonus points by pacing his “Jawbreaker” 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to an elapsed time mark of 5.849 at 243.28 mph.

“We’ve been working to get this car to run since the beginning of the season and it’s finally performing the way we knew it could,” Carter said. “We have been working real hard and I have to thank my whole crew for their effort. They have done an outstanding job. And I’d also like to thank this great crowd here at Edmonton for coming out to see us.”

The No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel was Kevin Jones, who claimed the spot on the strength of his 4.911, 275.96 pass in the class’ only session.

On the Nitro Funny Car front, defending champion and most recent event winner Dale Creasy Jr. laid claim to the top spot with his run of 5.319, 278.17.

Please keep in mind that the crew working will do everything possible to get track ready in time for the Street Legals but will have the track in prime condition for the CMDRA All Bike Drags on Saturday and Sunday. Added Incentive for Rocky Mountain Nationals

Professional Racers making the trip to the 2008 Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton will have additional incentive this season.

The Rocky Mountain National IHRA Crew Bonus will provide the top 12 Alcohol Funny Car drivers and the top 18 in both Pro Stock and Pro Modified (according to IHRA points standings following the President’s Cup Nationals) with a free car and driver entry, plus four crew entries, for the 2008 event. This will be in addition to the Edmonton travel incentive already in place.

“This is another way we want to take care of our racers. We understand the tow to Edmonton for the Rocky Mountain Nationals is the longest on our circuit and, with the price of fuel, our racers could use a break,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said. “With our cash incentives this is a great opportunity we hope our professional drivers will take advantage of. We think a free car and driver, with the additional crew entries, is an excellent added value. This is a great idea Rob Reeves from Castrol Raceway wanted to see in place and we all owe him a thanks for this.”

Here are the details of the cash incentive program:

Category Points Position Incentive
Torco Racing Fuels / Knoll Gas Pro Nitro Top Fuel Top 12 $7,500
Torco Racing Fuels / Knoll Gas Pro Nitro Funny Car Top 12 $7,500
Alcohol Funny Car Top 12 $2,000
Torco Racing Fuels / Knoll Gas Pro Modified Top 18 $2,000
Torco Racing Fuels /Knoll Gas Pro Stock Top 18 $2,000

In order to receive these incentives, a team must hold a top 12 or 18 standing in their class, make two rounds of qualifying (including the “Night of Fire”), and if qualified, run the first round of eliminations. If you do not qualify, but otherwise meet the above criteria, you will still receive the incentive amount.

Castrol Raceway Rocked

The debacle in Immokalee is a distant memory…

We floated into Canada and dialed in Armdrop LIVE! Learning from everything in Florida, our resident expert and Armdrop Racing Association president Brian Bossone went back to the laboratory, crunched some numbers, ran some spread sheets and came up with the slickest solution to all this confusion.

It was all so very simple. Organizing the right cars in the right lanes, selecting a floating dial time (an ET that BOTH cars could hit but didn’t require either car to go overly slow…) and handling the ladder like a pro were just three of the contributions that Brian made for the event. The result was a smooth format that was fun for both racer and fan.

We also added a twist and selected several hand picked match ups to run in a best 2 of 3 Heads Up, Hot Lap showdown for cash and prizes. Those races were amazing, one race being decided by .001 seconds. Does Brian Bossone know what he is doing? Yeah, I think so…

We had AWESOME sponsors for this event. A special shout out to Jim at JB’s Power Center, the great folks at Blue Nose Racing, Randy at Mainly Muscle and a cast of many others that I will give special attention to later on this blog. As always, the support from Stewart-Warner and Labonte Motorsports is something that we are HUGELY thankful for.

Rob, Kimberly, Sheena, Lynn, Mike and the rest of the Castrol crew were amazing to work with and ran a tight ship. If you are reading this and you ever get a chance to attend an event in Edmonton (actually a suburb called Leduc…) make SURE you do…

I will break down the event piece by piece in future posts but I wanted to get this written while I am still giddy from the weekend. Armdrop LIVE! was certainly a wonderful experience from our perspective. I can’t wait to see what the comments look like as the racers and fans weigh in.

Don’t quote me on this yet, (okay go ahead…lol) but I think we may have something here…

We learned a lot from our first event in Immokalee Regional Raceway and MANY changes have been made!

MORE CHANCES TO WIN!

The MAIN EVENTS

ArmDrop - Heads Up Bracket Racing:

This is a new twist on bracket racing with a heads up format utilizing the drop of Rich’s arms and a floating dial in system to determine the best bracket racer of the day. We will accept all entries to qualify (Door cars, Bikes, Quads, Snowmobiles, Front Engine Dragsters. Etc) and all will run together, as host track rules permit.

ArmDrop Q.T.T. (Qualifier test and tune)
